The Gate to the Blue
"I really wanted this piece to capture that specific moment of anticipation you feel when you’re walking through the dunes and the ocean finally reveals itself. I focused on that dramatic shift in the water—how it’s almost translucent turquoise at the shore but turns into that deep, heavy navy at the horizon.
I included the weathered wooden gate and the old wire fence to ground the scene and give it a sense of place, almost like a threshold you're about to cross. The light was a big part of the story for me here; I used a low sun to cast those long shadows across the sand and really highlight the movement of the clouds. To me, it feels like a quiet, perfect morning by the coast."
Painted in oils on a deep box canvas. This is a large imposing piece measuring one metre across by 30 cm down.
Please ignore the stripy strobe effect which is due to my camera reacting to the neon lighting in my studio. :-)
